Children

Pathways lead to many places in our lives, but the most important ones are the ones that are created in childhood. The brain connections and pathways begin forming in utero and at birth a child is born with all the neurons he/she will need for a lifetime. The critical components are the connections/pathways that are formed in the first five years of life, as this is the greatest period of brain growth. These connections are formed by the interaction and experiences that a child has with the people and environment in his/her present world. Enriching positive experiences are needed for healthy essential brain pathways to be created. Each and every experience a child encounters makes a lasting connection in the brain. These connections create the level of functioning that will occur in all areas of development; motor, language, social, emotional, and cognitive.

Unfortunately in life, children may be exposed to unhealthy, inappropriate, and sometimes traumatic experiences leading to connections being formed that lead a child to learn negative patterns of behaviors due to the brain's natural response to cope with the fear, pain, and multiple negative emotions that are experienced during this event. Lack of recognition of these negative patterns can make the difference between a childhood filled with happiness, laughter, and success to a childhood filled with sadness, inattention, defiance, anxiety, depression, acting out, low self esteem, and even failure. Patterns that are not repaired and rewired can last a life time. Research shows that early intervention is critical to changing the negative patterns that were formed early on. The brain is an amazing organ and can be repaired with the correct intervention as long as the child and family are willing. All children have essential needs that must be met for optimal development. This teaches the brain internal emotional regulation, positive social skills, healthy communication skills, emotional coping skills, and a feeling of positive self-worth.
